In the 1960s on holiday in Majorca we used to go to barbecues. We got picked up at the hotel by bus and then were driven up into to the hills, to what was like a manor house. When entering, you were given a glass of wine, white or red, and then went on to the barbecues with a sausage on a stick to cook. Then afterwards you went to these tables onwhich were laid out, chicken and jacket potato, suckling pig and hot rum punch. Then you go inside and drink and eat all you could want. It was a good night out and we got merry.
I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere and you had a good sing-song. Great atmosphere, no rivalry, there were Germans there but they joined in. In later years there were lager louts and they spoilt it.
