SUDDEN SUNSET
One February morning when I awoke
Before I heard the wild geese call
I looked out of my window
And saw the grey sky
Changing to a crimson glow.
A little while later
The morning sky
Was a sudden sunset
South of the equator.
Suddenly it streaked
with one bright line
Expanding in the slip stream
Of an east bound plane.
Today the clammy hand of cancer
Casts my dreams out of my sight.
Now I look back seeking
Happy memories againThere came to mind
A magnificent obsession
For someone I once knew well.
It ended with teenage tears
And imagined fears
That I would never love again. One year ago we met again
The second time round I thought
I was the one with my feet on the ground,
Yet on that fine incredible April day
A hurried gentle parting kiss
Surprised me with a waking dream
And the whole wide world seemed seventeen.
