For the past three years we have been working with a group of four women who attend Hospice in the Weald, Greenwich & Bexley Cottage Hospice, and Marie Curie Edenhall, to develop an ambitious musical that tells the intertwined stories of their encounters with illness.
Previewed as a Musical Work in Progress at the Rosetta Live! Festival in July 2004, The Mariners was presented as part of Greenwich Theatre “Musical Futures” festival of musical theatre in 2006 and is touring hospices and studio theatres Autumn 2007.
The musical score is by Orland Gough and performed by his charismatic vocal choir, The Shout, with a libretto developed by Lucinda Jarrett and Chris Rawlence from the writing and experiences of Muriel Kindler, Jennie Humm, Glassine Greene and Collette Waller.
Beginning with diagnosis, the story takes the audience on the roller coaster ride of life-threatening illness - the fears and the pain, but also the laughter, exhilaration, and understanding.
Pulling no punches, The Mariners is a remarkable exploration of the durability and fragility of life, in the tenacious words of those who are actually fighting for it.
