Evelina Summer School, St. Thomas Children's Hospital

In July 2007, Michelle Kioussis taught a 3-day filmmaking workshop with Simon Hyde at Evelina Summer School, St. Thomas Children's Hospital. Most of the kids were 7 - 10 year old patients at the hospital as well as the siblings of young patients - all with a lot of creative energy to burn.

On the first morning, the kids talked about their favourite characters and movies. Then they created the characters, story and shot lists for 'Guitar Hood and the Magic Shopkeepers' using props and locations they had to choose from at Evelina. Then came the decision of who would act and who would direct and shoot the movie. After an equipment demo, they rushed off to shoot their idea.

On the second day, we finished shooting the movie and then edited it together on iMovie. They chose the best of two takes, the title and a few effects. Voila! A film was made. On the third day we had a screening and they even had time to film some extras, like Jiya telling the story of 'Guitar Hood and the Magic Shopkeepers' plus Abi and Jordan's stories of why they happened to be at St. Thomas's on that day. Superheroes couldn't have done as much as they did in three short days!
